RESIDENTIAL SAFETY

Despite efforts by Savannah State University’s security, safety continues to be an issue on campus. Residential assistants and campus police found numerous doors unlocked in various residential halls.
Jamarr Rayne, residential director for the University Village said that personal safety is not a high priority among students.
” Though Savannah State is one of two public institutions that have gates, I feel that students should be a little more careful with who they let in their apartment after hours,” Rayne said.
Steps have been taken to promote better safety practices.
” As community assistants in conjunction with campus police, we are taking steps to ensure safety to prevent such incidents from happening,” said 22-year-old community assistant Gabriel Horton.
Campus security recommends students follow these measures to stay safe:
Lock doors and windows and do not lend keys or personal identification cards to anyone. Report lost keys and cards immediately. If a student receives an unannounced guest during visiting hours, officials strongly suggest that student identify the guest prior to unlocking the door.
Immediately report any strangers, theft, or unusual occurrences to the community assistants, resident directors or campus police at 912-358-3014.
However, Tempest Jolley, a 22 year-old senior, and community assistant said
these safety measures are not enough.
“Residents are quickly sidetracked and will let people who they barely know in their apartment, which is completely unsafe,” Jolley said.
